BugfixerGPT ?

Does it have an engineer’s degree?

does it count if it has one of these ° ?

I dont care nor mind if somebody calls a software dev engineer or not… in fact there is kinda inflation in using this term in our branch e.g. infrastructure engineer, seo engineer, whatever

the professional societies of engineers do

at home they forced Sun to rename their ā€œSun certified system engineerā€ and MS to rename their MCSE ā€œMicrosoft certified systems engineerā€

Often calling yourself an engineer implies a certain level of professional schooling AND professional liability

EDIT: something that ā€œlots of years of experienceā€ doesnt satisfy as far as the professional societies are concerned

As there are no self-styled pharmacists , medics, doctors and nurses, pilots and so on…

in a lot of jurisdictions these professional societies are created by law and their oversight of the terms and regulation of the profession is left up to them and the politicians stay the heck out of it

Doctors, pharmacists, lawyers, nurses teachers and many other professions are this way here

can you imagine going to a doctor to get a procedure done and saying

So you’re a doctor where did you study ?

Oh I didnt study to be a doctor but I’ve done this for many years so dont worry

Uh is it safe for me to have this procedure done with you ?

Oh sure. I’ve googled it and practiced it on a dummy several times so I’m sure we can remove your …

Uhmmmm I know how fast I’d be leaving

But thats where a lot of self styled ā€œengineersā€ are

My name is Dr. Xojo, Dr. Genius Xojo

You are Prof.Dr.Genius Dr. Engineer Xojo

Today, Ricardo became an engineer
https://forum.xojo.com/t/xdc-2023-web-hands-on-training/75550

and Christian is not :upside_down_face:
https://forum.xojo.com/t/xdc-2023-extending-xojo-with-the-monkeybread-plugins/75549

What does it matter if those Xojo developers are engineers or not? Who are we to determine if they are real engineers or not? On what basis are they judged to be engineers or not?

As long as they do their job right, they can give themselves whatever title they want, even doctors.

Please, people, don’t be so negative. You all made the decision long ago to abandon Xojo. What difference does it make to keep dwelling on the past? All of you are using other languages now. Your efforts and energy are better used to improve your skills in those other languages.

This is only my idea, and yours can differ.

WHO IS AN ENGINEER? FOLLOWING TO THE LAWS SOMEBODY HOLDING A BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING OR A MASTER OF ENGINEERING. So simple. But you are deciding that now? Super. Good Idea. Have a nice time

The problem is Xojo’s marketing attitude and how they try to appeal to new customers.

There are countries with no rules and there are countries with strict rules, including Germany and Texas.

In Germany, abusing a title is a serious offence that can result in a prison sentence of up to one year. I hold a doctorate, but I cannot call myself a PhD, or I could face consequences, even though the titles are similar. At my alma mater, this rule is enforced so strictly that my German title could be revoked if I would use publicly anything else than my official title.

Restrictions only apply if the title is ā€œusedā€ in a private context (e.g., showing off privately). Recognisably ironic designations are not considered violations. ā€œDr Bad Wolfā€ is acceptable under these regulations.

The fact that Texas, which is the headquarters of the corporation, also has such strict rules, surprises some users here, and they discuss it. I think that’s a legitimate topic.

In my case, it’s simple. I’m not an engineer. I am a medical professional who has been working in IT for almost 30 years. So, just call me Doc IT, and everything is fine

Permitted use: Dr. Beat

I am also not an engineer and, indeed, not a doctor. I would never claim or say that I am an engineer because I am not. Sooner or later, that will explode in my face.

The same is true for people at Xojo. If they are not actual engineers but claim to be, this will bounce back to them.

However, I do understand the frustration of true engineers coming across that kind of charlatan who claims to be an engineer. True engineers work hard for their grades.

With my former reply, I did not want to be disrespectful, I was only asking for positivity.

Yes, that’s certainly true that we occasionally (or always?) step up our game here, but unfortunately there are also good reasons for frustration. Some still have old Xojo projects to migrate, others have a job where they can’t get away from the software, and probably everyone agrees that they have backed the wrong horse for years and often decades.

But here a sign for positivity: +

The entire point is that there is the need for massive education to be an engineer. And that they are not even a bit respecting. Somebody which studied not even Computer Science can not be a Software Engineer. He can be Developer, he can be programmer. But Engineer? If and when somebody studied for holding a bachelor of engineering degree he was working hard for this degree.

Xojo Inc doesn’t disclose the qualifications of their developers. Xojo Inc does have the habit of making misleading and unverifiable claims. Some of these claims are obviously false (…there are hundreds of thousands of Xojo developers….).
They are luring people into buying licenses by making unsubstantiated claims.
Those who have no prior experience with this company can read and come to their own conclusions.

that are the two most important for me and the most interesting
