XDC Anywhere?

I wonder if the person was referring to the licensing & runtimes changes FM has made
Its become VERY expensive to deploy FM over thee years

If its not that I truly have no idea what else it might be

Your comment makes me think of Mike the Dog, the border collie that became famous in ā€œDown and Out in Beverly Hillsā€. On a talk show, Mike’s trainer bragged about the number of tricks Mike knew (it was three digits.) The host asked, ā€œAre you counting stuff like ā€˜jumping on the furniture’?ā€

sorry but NO. filemaker as @npalardy said is extremely expensive when you deploy. xojo is not.
and with filemaker you must use the ui elements the way they give it to you. you can’t make your own, and the filemaker script is nothing but a toy.
xojo is less easy to use when it comes to databases, but once you’ve made your framework it’s incredibly powerful.
I can make a working prototype of a database frontend in the same time where others can only make the specifications, and for many different databases, and many platform.
but it took some years to make this work. it is not at a beginner level for sure.

Well, FileMaker and Xojo are very different worlds.

FileMaker is for custom database centric business solutions. And a custom made solution to run a business costs enough man-months, that the cost for licensing is usually not the problem.

That is much different to Xojo, where you often make more mass applications like an utility and sell that to thousands of people for a few dollar.

FileMaker is expensive but not many bugs.

Xojo is affordable and has lots of bugs.

PHP is free and not many bugs.

As Hal said, FileMaker is more expensive but it actually works.

They don’t try to sell stuff that doesn’t work and rename stuff all the time. It’s also indirectly backed by Apple (as Claris is a subsidiary). I used FileMaker daily for a long period and have never had the issues I’ve seen with Xojo, however, they are different tools for different things and I used them as such. I have solutions written in both, for different purposes but FileMaker usually frustrates me less.

Either way, my main point was I can’t see a mass exodus of FileMaker developers to Xojo.

Xojo vision is to chases after customers that no longer exists. What they are going to have looks like what VB6 had 25 years ago, this days, a real alternative for FileMaker is one of the many ā€œNoCodeā€ tools that exists, A simple binding of controls will be appealing only for new people with cero experience in other tools.

I think you guys have it all wrong. It was MERCIFULLY short. Imagine an HOUR of that! Surely the despair would create a suicide wave - at least the whole population of IfNotNil would have been wiped out! Kindness to his enemies - you can’t get more merciful than that. So Geoff was saving lives!

And what about the Planet? Think of all the time and energy saved! That was a VERY substantial contribution in the fight against climate change!

Okay let’s count:
Windows x86/64
Linux X86/64
Linux ARM
MacOS
IOS
Androi

That’s the most reliable counting wise. But following to that it should be 7 OSses: MacOS X64 AND MacOS ARM!!!

So: seven operating Systems. While RPI Is on Arm they count it as an OS Platform by self

JAVA is FREE and NETBEANS is free and has even less Bugs than PHP. For Desktop on ALL platforms develop for free.

Yeah but he could give the really new informations within 25 seconds. That would be fast and environment saving.

Second video is up - 11 minutes. Not quite matching the statement ā€œ Over the next 4 hours we’ll be posting one video per hour. They vary in length, most are around 30 minutes with some shorter and some longer. ā€

Summary - Xojo for Android has taken some time. It’s cross compiled to/using Kotlin.

Save yourselves the 11 minutes - I wish I had…

Wow, less than 30 min of info so far about the two most important topics.

Won’t be watching it yet, but the next one is out about building plugins and it’s 14 minutes.

Damn, I want Xojo to be successful and want to use their tool but they are making it impossible for themselves!

We all tried to help Xojo but they delete posts, lock threads, and ban people. I’m one of the banned. Xojo takes feedback as an attack. I don’t understand, but the result is pushing devs away.

This ā€œXDCā€ is completely disrespectful. It reminds me of XDC Miami when Web 2.0 wasn’t ready and a similar Android demo was given. Not much progress since then which shows in the presentations.

The days before XDC Miami is the last time time I used Xojo. That was painful, but now I’ve replaced Xojo with PHP.

I just can’t don’t see anything changing until there is new management. And that’s not likey to change.

one per hour over next 4 hours, that means 4 videos… ā€œmost of 4 is 3ā€ and 2 of the vids clock at 11 minutes… So they can’t even be truthful about the content of the presentations …sigh

Seems they still maintain the motto over promise and under/don’t deliver!

All I’ve seen so far is extremely underwhelming. Why organize an event if you have nothing to show for? It is staggering you have to add a slide like this to fill a couple of minutes!

All these are so obvious they are in there. I’ve never seen a tool who had to brag about having a Pair, a Rect, a Point or a Timer for that matter in their core framework. They really had to dig deep to fill this slide. Surprised I don’t see IF - THEN - ELSE in there…

The silence on TOF after what should be an exciting moment speaks volumes. Guess this event opens more and more peoples eyes that Xojo is a tool with very little future and they better move on to something else if they want their own business to flourish.

Started the move a few weeks ago and consider it the best decision I made.

You now have the chance to watch the longest video so far in this XDC: mine.
