Even you who are so bussy managing your crowded forum has the time to come here to read all what Hal has to say and personaly attacking him.
Talking about your successful forum, waht was your slogan?
“Great Minds Discuss Ideas. Average Minds Discuss Events. Small Minds Discuss People.”
Coming to complain about Hal all the time only shows that you are small-minded according to your own philosophy.
Where is the Xojo Project Manager? Shouldnt that person explain where Andoid is? Like what is left to do or the current bug count or how many bugs need to be fixed to ship???
Dana Brown’s repetitive posts saying “almost there” for year’s aren’t cutting it…
Hal, it is so that in a case like that it is not that simple. You need the man power and after you need the testing time for the Software. This is the entire problem. Cause Xojo Android needs Testing it will need also time. It is a huge project and I know from CodenameOne for example how big the dimensions of a project like this are. And that is for a small team like the Xojo team not that simple to manage. A project Manager con try to sort out and can try to communicate to the community but what he can’t do is level down the amount of work inside the project. And exactly that is the point at the moment. The project is huge and the amount of work grows with every Bug found inside. The way they tried was not correct so they changed it and landed at Kotlin Multiplatform. What shall I say. At least that decision will bring out a reliable and stable project. And it will need the time they need to bring it to the point that releasing it snot painful.
None of which is any excuse for a “professional software” company. If they are short staffed, either say so, or hire more developers. If out of their league, then cancel the project and take your lumps.
FYI… Xojo is both in this case.
They are NOT “adequated staffed”. They are woefully short staffed for the level of effort they are trying to achieve. They are short staffed in they do not have a QA department (of if they do, they have NO CLUE how to manage QA), they have NO Project Manager (and really they should have one dedicated to each platform), (or if they do, they have NO CLUE how to manage projects)
This seems to be “we need to innovate”… Ok, change the syntax. Oh Look SHINY, I want that
Dave you are right but what shall they do: there is not a big market, Xojo a niche product and they want to innovate and to extend the functionality of the platform to power up their Business. So I can understand that they try. What I can’t see is the fast success but that is impossible with a Team which is not hundreds but a few.
Some of the problems might be is that we think Xojo SHOULD be a “professional software company”.
Thinking about that though, it’s really a “hobbyist software company”. Not software for hobbyists, but the Xojo team is really a bunch of hobbyists themselves. That really explain why there doesn’t seem to be a plan, just renaming things, the apparent lack of tests, and no project manager.
It’s a tool create by hobbyists…
Xojo will never work as we expect. It just can’t rise above the current hot mess being run by Geoff Perlman.
Open Sourcing would immediately destroy their Business model. So they can’t open Source it. Xojo is not SAAS or something like that. Like CodenameOne for example which is open Source. Or Vaadin or even Java Swing and Java FX. All of them having together: open Source Solutions. Simply with all the stuffs you need to work with it. Without anything you would need to work and have to pay for it. The entire point behind.
But Xojo Universe works different. They have no Idea about Open Sourcing. If it would be a nice Idea to build a command Line compiler. As first. And to implement for example an IDE like IntelliJ with all the functionality which is needed for modern programmers. But, that will be in the foreseeable future only a dream. While the language isn’t open Source and the Compiler isn’t also it is a proprietary Solution and of coarse always also a black box.
While you can look for example in CodenameOne how it builds up Objective C Code for compiling for IOS you can see and learn from it and you could even modificative stuffs like this. You can even implement own functionalities in it like I was doing. That is normal and the point with open Source.
But Xojo is not able to release as Open Source. They would loose their control about the Code and they would loose the control to make money with in in their eyes. If or if this is true? Who knows. But in that case there will be no change. I would make a bet that it will stay like it is for the rest of all time it exists.
