Xojo Hmmmm šŸ¤”

Like I said those who took offence seemed to do so without much consideration of other possible factors

Be insulted because you THINK he’s saying you dont contribute to the company (which ISNT what was said at all)
React based on that
And continue to BE insulted even when he DID clarify

:man_shrugging:

Cut the guy a tiny bit of slack
Say something like

Everyone here contributes in different ways

move on

I think I understand what you’re trying to say
I’m just disappointed that the first reaction is, or seemed to be, to be offended
And then continue to react based on that first, possibly wrong, impression of what was being said

I get what you mean. I.e. here in the German-speaking part of Switzerland a waitress is called ā€˜Serviertochter’. ā€˜Servier’ its the noun related to the verb ā€˜servieren’ (to serve…meals) and Tochter means daughter. It is an old expression and applies even when the lady doing the job does not belong to the restaurant owner’s family.

I’d like to note that Dana’s moderation was adequate this time. Only when her talented co-moderator stomped in, raising the level of aggression, things went awry. In her explanation why the thread was closed can be found: ā€˜ā€¦or other members of the forum’.

P.S. The co-moderator’s aggression show could also be staged in order to get the thread closed.

I was surprised the thread lasted as long as it did. In the meantime, though, no Xojo staff or MVPs ever chimed in to address the original topic.

Well, perhaps we’re not discussing about the same part of the sentence, in regard to what was considered ā€œrudeā€.
One could consider either the part about not contributing to the company, while someone else may rather consider the words used (ā€œsisterā€ and ā€œdaughtersā€ as being ā€œmockeriesā€). While I get that both could be considered hard, the latter seems to have been subject to apologises from the poster; not the latter. Hence my thinking about the issue being the language used.
It’s entirely possible I’m wrong, of course.

Possibly that the language used later wouldn’t have been taken bad if the first reaction has been otherwise in the first place. I, for one, would still have taken ā€œsisterā€ and ā€œdaughterā€ as being a kind of sad mockery, regardless of the previous posts.

Hehe, we are not so far

In the french part of Switzerland, we learn ā€œhigh germanā€ (I guess we can translate ā€œhochdeutschā€ that way in english  ) in school. I actually can’t understand the swiss-German language, beside my german being ā€œcorrectā€. Those are unexpectedly spoken very differently.

Glad to have learnt this, thanks.

So do I think.

Just don’t call a waitress ā€˜Serviertochter’ when you are in a restaurant. It is a colloquial term people familiar with each other use, not a term non-locals should employ :slightly_smiling_face:

I am a German national and learned understanding Swiss German here. There is a significant difference between the Bernese dialect and dialects spoken in other parts of Switzerland like Zürich or Basel. People who learned regular (high German) are lost at first contact with people speaking dialect. I made the same experience when living in France. Understanding people from southern France took me a while and I took great pleasure in learning all the specifics of a language.

I think being called ā€œdaughterā€ or ā€œsonā€ is no offence if the father is a genius.

For further paternity inquiries feel free to send an email to fertileGenius@xojo.com.

But I’m with @anic297 - I personally felt that this statement was inappropriate, but no reason to react that way, nor to close the thread.

its been reopened as there was apparently a misunderstanding about what Jeffery wrote & what he meant

heh I wonder how their spam filters are going to handle that one :stuck_out_tongue:

To be honest me too.

I knew it wasn’t the kind of thread that Xojo would want frequently appearing at the top of the forum, so the locking of it and then its disappearance was inevitable. They just needed a reason to do it.

Edit: It’s back up!

I love Anthony’s comment when talking about Geoff, Dana and Alyssa ā€œThe three are in no way related and Dana and Alyssa contribute greatly to Xojo.ā€ What about Geoff?

Mac always was for Xojo the primary platform, with Windows and Web secondary and Linux clearly last one in terms of love, details, performance and stability.

It seems to me Xojo is degrading on its primary platform when Jeffery is calling for more attention.

Maybe Anthony ā€˜the moderator from hell’ G. Cyphers got punished for this big oversight?

And who knows, we might see on TOF some pros back, emerging from their hiding places after years of terror and closing posts if what was said didn’t suit him… [wishful thinking]

Xojo’s problem isn’t an untrained and unpaid moderator. Once they get serious in addressing the many issues that plagues the product, they may see a higher level of participation. As long a Xojo is managed along the lines of ā€˜I report to no one’ I don’t see this happen.

In all fairness, Anthony has his own struggles outside of the Xojo forum, and so it comes as no surprise he’s having to let go off some things.

He and I don’t always see eye to eye, but I do hope not trying to do too much will help him.

I’m solely judging his behavior on TOF and am unaware of his personal struggles for which I wish him all the best too. Maybe they were partly responsible for his bullying/anger towards certain people on TOF? (speculation)

I’ve see (to) many people changing personality because of e.g. having a burnout by taking on to much and started to act completely out of character.

IMO, another moderator is known to be less kind than Anthony, which I found understanding at times (as opposed to ā€œthe other oneā€).

Anthony is the second person to give up their MVP / Moderator status since ā€œ2.0 All The Thingsā€.

who was the first? Not all MVPs are active anyways.

in my eyes MVP is anyhow not from interest. They rule the own people. It is a bit likethe old aristocracy, it goes on to rule and divide. And if the people have no bread to eat, please eat cake. Maria Antoinette can speak about where that ended for her.

But every community requires moderators, and it is a thankless yet time-consuming job where pleasing everyone is impossible.

Interestingly and illogically, the Greens don’t allow anyone to assist them, but a select few are permitted to handle the forum’s dirty work for free. In my opinion, this arrangement isn’t necessarily fair.

It would likely be more beneficial if they could receive help with the coding and simply manage the forum themselves.
