Xojo Banning and Deleting Posts

I am very happy that we got Geoff to the bug fix release in r2. Major things planned for r2 moved back to r3 or r4 to give more time to fix bugs and have new things in a better state before going to beta testing.

We will see if there will be substancial improvements…

Is that a ā€œbetter stateā€ release? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

@MarkusWinter : not everybody gets your humour.

flagged by the community? weird :flushed:

Well, Kem agreed and hid it as inappropriate. [fixed the wrong ā€œdeletedā€ I used - my apologies to Kem]

I did some voluntary social work as a student in Germany with handicapped people, and what they hated most was to be treated as handicapped. They might have a handicap, but that didn’t make them less of a person.

For several years during my PhD in Edinburgh (Scotland) I lived in beautiful student houses, and I always tried to get the people together and bond (eg on the first day I would get us all to get some takeaway and have a big meal together, sharing everything). And every year at the end of term the Asian students would come and thank me for treating them ā€œnormalā€. The first time I was flabbergasted, but I soon learned that they experienced a LOT of racism in their life. They didn’t want to be mollycoddled, they wanted to be treated normal.

My brother died of cancer at the age of 47. He got a lot of visitors, and while he appreciated them coming around, he hated how they tip-toed around him and how everyone poured out their commiserations like clockwork. It seemed as if everyone was following an invisible script. But seriously - do YOU want to spend the last weeks of your life being made to feel miserable? My uncle was the first one to make him laugh and forget about the cancer for a few minutes. What my brother wanted was a normality that slipped further and further away from him, and he loved those that could bring it back to him, that made him feel alive and not like he was dying … even if only for a few moments.

The Xojo forum has become a place ruled by the easily offended, the humourless, the witless, the grey … and they made the forum into the equivalent of a Nana-State that the communists would be ashamed of.

And I’m starting to feel ashamed when I tell people I use Xojo.

Well, then wish Tim a good surgery and don’t post details.
(no idea what surgery it is, but if people wish the best, it’s usually something more serious)

Tim had already posted that he is having eye surgery.

P.S. But I’ll be damned if I can find it now … as I recall it was in a message (relating to Lifeboat?) stating that he would not be able to reply for a few days as he was having eye surgery, but he might have deleted that. But I can’t exclude the possibility that I’m misremembering.

… and now INN is following Xojo’s example …:clap::clap:

I want the post not to be hidden, Markus is right.

My favourite Get Well card played on the saying ā€œSick like a parrotā€ (which means really sick, throw up and everything). It showed a group of parrots in a hospital room with every single one of them saying ā€œGet Well!ā€ … and a grumpy looking parrot in bed saying ā€œGet Lost!ā€

I was actually thinking people here might come up with posts that cheer up Tim and make him laugh … put in more effort and thought than is being shown on TOF, where every reply is pretty much like the other.

So much easier to write a standard reply …

So disappointing …

Obviously …

… how did they ever survive Monthy Python without seizing up …?

Ha. I am getting that humor. It is, let me say, to intensive for some. Who cares.

Wow. I had to let that sink in for a while. So here is my considered humourless reply:

Who the hell died and made you God that you think you can tell others what they can and cannot write???

You can publicly disagree to your heart’s content, I’m happy to be called out on mistakes and shown to be wrong - but when did you start thinking THAT is ok?

I can still see it:

even in incognito mode.

Why do you think it was deleted?
Maybe it is a forum function to not show the message to you if your message is hidden?

I can’t see anything offensive in that post. It is simply a joke, to make the recipient smile. There was certainly no malicious intent behind it.

There is a default policy on DISCOURSE that a flagged post is then hidden until it is reviewed

I dont recall an admin EVER deleting a post
In a YEAR we’ve had 8 posts flagged
ALL we expect is ā€œdont be an assholeā€
If you dont like someone and their posts use the ignore feature

The post isnt deleted
Just hidden
And it doesnt even seem to have been Kem that did anything
Discourse flagging system is such that if the minimum number of other members flag a post it will be hidden pending review
If a moderator agrees then the post will be permanently hidden or can be restored

Thats what happened here and also what seems to have occurred on TOF

nothing nefarious

just how Discourse works

Then my question would be when a moderator sets the post to be shown again? I do not even know a moderator of inn. I thought all time that you are one of the moderators. The point Markus claims about is interesting: people flagging is hiding a post. That makes the same like the Xojo Forum. We all agree that that is a problem while Xojo behaves like Xojo behaves. And here people don’t want to find the same. That is the point behind it.
