Xojo Banning and Deleting Posts

Theres no NEED for xojo to do this but …
Its already ICU based and handles several things better than string does

but …

Now we are at the point!

Handling things better all depends on how you expect strings to work. For us, Xojo is currently handling them the right way but its obvious the current method isn’t good enough for others.

Since String won the battle I guess their solution will be to add some new methods which use ICU which is how it has been solved in other languages.

For a toolset that supposedly tries to appeal to newcomers and folks that are NOT “programmers all day every day” string is one of those you see folks get hung up on all the time

The infamous “why are there diamonds in my ui” comes up frequently - or variants of it

Splitting string into memoryblock and “textual data” could alleviate that

That it didnt happen to fit your code base isnt the issue kev

Is it likely they will do this ?
No

It’s convenient to “push things forward” despite it breaking code (API 2) when that suits Xojo’s goals and not when it doesnt (string)

Am I surprised ? Not in the least

I agree String isn’t perfect and can lead to confusion. Unfortunately, Text came with its own set of problems which were never addressed.

I’m all for pushing things forward when the new solution is better but if String had have been removed in favour of Text then it would have left applications such as our dead.

which is why I’d leave text in the lang
make it better sure
faster would be nice - I dont know the specific impediments that make it so slow
Maybe they have something to do with the SDK’s used and UTF8

This is not a Developer lack of knowledge, but a lack of computer use. I saw people who want to create an application (or applications).

Some people believe they can create applications because they use a computer.
They use “as is” a computer.
They do not know how things are done, they only use a computer.
These kind of people use the space bar instead of the Tab bar because they do not know the difference: in both cases, there is “space” between the definition and the quantity / unit price / total, and so on.

They write novels and believe they know the word processor they use for so many years.

These people copy text from a web page, paste it in their word processor (wp) and everything is (most of the time) OK. And if they do not print the result they believe the sun is shining.
When it comes to paste it in a TextArea, troubles can be shown. When they do the same on a different (older) computer, they do not understand why the result if different (yes, diamonds, etc.).

And here I do not talk about encoding because this kind of people never knew such a thing.

You do not fight an oil fire with water.

Other example is the LR system move.
The trouble is not in the way the information is displayed, but in the information itself.

Is there’s an entry talking about the infamous diamond character in the LR ?

Example:
http://docs.xojo.com/Font.Ascent

This explanation is good for me, but is it enough for the Xojo target user ?
You do not need this knowledge to write a novel with your wp.
You do not have to know what woven or orphans are (when you wrote a book). But that may help.

Time for lunch.

A simple google return interesting images and, for example:

Y’all need to start a new topic. We have drifted off the road a bit.

We are possibly not. On tof they would close and we would have to. But revolutionary we do not have to

And the next one closed:

Too scared to have a discussion about the issues. Just shut it down with no consideration.

And the other MVPs/staff must “Like” the comment about closing it to validate that action as the right move

Your generalization is inaccurate. Bugs are fixed in every new release.

is, true. but leaves off that new bugs & regressions often are ALSO part of a release

An honest open discussion might actually be healthy instead of this “US” vs “THEM” siege mentality they seem to display

I got the survey, too. But it doesn’t matter what I write because they are going to ignore it anyways. My only wish was that they don’t release the new and “improved” controls.

''There are still a few regressions with xojo in 2021r2 that we have not bothered to resolve since 2019r11"

is how I read that, at least the first 4 or 5 times anyway.

Looking at how the links to the survey are set up it appears they are unique per person
If so the they can throw out, or ignore, the surveys from people who they label as “not friends” or whatever

Had they sent out a survey that was anonymous, but could only be filled out once per IP or something like that, they MIGHT get a more honest result

but what do I know
I’m just a developer

Don’t they have IPs from the forum and from each time the IDE starts and send the user?

I assumed so and didn’t write anything serious into the survey.

I noticed that as well. The big boys club - wonder what they are compensating for.

I didn’t get a survey, ah well.
