From what I understand the Web SDK is not done yet and when it’s done it still needs to be tested by the MVPs. Hopefully nothing major to fix there.
Yesterday I spent a few hours playing around with the UI of an app I thought I would move to 2.0 but it turned out to be a big headache (as expected) to redesign the UI for the larger controls. Not that excited about moving this thing to 2.0 right now.
At this point not having seen anything other than a video its kind of disappointing
There’s several of us that had expected they’d release a version at the conference and might still stick to that but that doesnt seem to be happening - yet
All I can say is that is disappointing
And I wonder how much the entire API 2.0 roll out set things back.
There’s no way the huge roll out, reversal etc didnt cost them time getting Web 2.0 ready
A short beta would be awful if it leaves a lot of bugs laying around
And not a very good start for the whole new MVP program
I get that a LOT of people screaming at them about API 2 is probably part of why they did this but the point is that they had a LOT of people screaming at them saying what a horrible idea it was
And rolled it out in R2 anyway - the got yelled at more and reverted things
Personally feel like the MVP program is a way to NOT have that many people to listen to. Period.
Not a way to getter better feedback or more feedback samples and use cases. Just less feedback. Period.
Add in things that others have passed along to me and that really seems to be it.
I guess we’ll see but the way things are right now with no pre-releases yet - who knows
For the few things that one MVP have said about Web 2.0, I don’t think the only bug reports they are fixing are the ones we can see from Geoff.
And when I said short beta I mean at most a month after first beta. I don’t know if they are going to release an alpha version like other times or go directly to beta version for first pre-release (open) beta.
We can’t do much until they offer a pre-release and see how good it is.
I hope there are not much bugs with Web 2.0 but I understand several features will not be delivered until a later (or various) release(s).
I would agree - I suspect that what we can see is just a small glimpse
But, that is just my suspicion and I have no other evidence to prove it only my decade of experience there
Web 2.0.0.0 will be for early adopters guinea pigs. I’m not one, and will wait and watch the same things API 2.0 launch brought, again, when people try it in real life. Greg will be stressed.
I have two concerns with the lack of 2020 R1 (alpha or whatever Geoff wants to call it) is:
It’s nowhere near done. Until @npalardy posted some sleuthing implying there are major bugs remaining I thought this was unlikely but now I’m not so sure.
It’s only being tested by the MVPs and the engineers and that (in Geoff’s mind) will be adequate to release it. That’s a bad scenario.
Lets just call it “pre-release” since we have no idea if this is a beta or what any more
I did as well until I went looking around and I have to admit that what I saw surprised me
THIS is probably my biggest concern
I sure hope whatever we get is a pre-release and we’ll have a decent time frame to kick it around the block but we dont know
Nor will we know as Geoff said in the Q & A
One day the version we have could be “good enough” and out it goes
We’ll have to see whether this encourages the behaviour they want; early often testing of releases
Looking at the pre-release forum section, I see that when the pre-release start with a beta version the release is in a bit less than 1 month.
Xojo2018r1 started the pre-release testing with an early alpha version, after several months that changed to beta and one month later we got a release.
My guess is that this month we will get a beta version and next month the release. After looking at that, I can say that all beta cycles are “short” by my definition (of course 2019r2beta cycle took several months but that is another story).
I believe I read a post or something written by Geoff where he mentioned this year we will be seeing pouring (I can’t find the post or article, perhaps it was just a dream). At this pace I don’t see any pouring happening.
“Geoff used an interesting metaphor in a conversation recently. He said, “Since we have been working on so many multi-year projects, 2019 had a bit of a drought of big new features, but in 2020 we are predicting rain … lots of rain.” This really got me thinking about how different XOJO.CONNECT 2020 will be from the past few Xojo Developer Conferences.”
I did had it a bit wrong, it says “lots of rain” my mind recalled it as “pouring” same difference
Huh …
I guess we’ll see once things land wont we ?
They do seem to be pushing hard - a pile of bugs reported seem to have gotten fixed recently so who knows
Although I have to say, despite contributing to this thread, I could not care less about Web 2.0 if I tried.
Its not something any of my clients are doing so even if its a fantastic things I will likely just ignore it - because its of no use to me or my clients
The web app I’m working on will eventually need an IOS and Android companion apps so I am interested on that too, I know… wishful thinking and all. I had planned from the start on developing the mobile apps using the Quasar Framework but the idea of being able to develop everything with Xojo sure sounds interesting.
Also, something I did not expected during this crisis was to receive a call from a company I did some work for a while ago asking me if I was interested in doing an update to a desktop app I developed for them a may years ago. Workers will defenitely be welcomed for this project. So I guess I’m back at being interested in “everything else” too.
Well, it looks like we will not have any beta, now the pre-release that will be available will be called Build. No FC either, just a build with installation components. Blog post.
