Rumor: Touch screen Mac coming this year

At least now we know why Tahoe looks like shit on the Mac, to accommodate touch.

At the end it is for me totally useless. I have afew Windows Notebooks in my company which have Touch.Let me say it so: never used. And mac with touch? Would have for me nothing I would say I pay a buck more for it. But hey, at least there is a big sanbase and many people will buy it while it has touch.

Apple is about commiting same mistakes MS did with its Win8 tiles experience and later on with its surface tables and devices…

The only ones who profit: manufacturers of screen cleaning products.

For years many have wished for this, but Apple never gave in. Most assumed it was to prevent cannibalizing iPad and especially iPad Pro sales.

I always thought this can been useful. I have an ASUS laptop that is touchscreen, and the screen can fold all the way back against the bottom side of the case to make it work/feel just like a tablet. It’s convenient when you need a truly mobile (i.e. hand-held) computer without having to switch devices and workflows (trying to balance a laptop in one hand while walking around definitely demands an accidental damage policy  ).

Granted, for many (most?) people, such a scenario isn’t very common. And with the state of current tablets and phones and various “hand-off” schemes, it’s probably even less important.

So the question is, why now after stalwartly refusing for so long? My guess is a combination of “greed” as Thorsten alludes to and leadership changes within Apple.

But if they pull it off and do a good job, I would seriously consider it when it’s time to finally upgrade (been putting that off as long as I can). But I definitely won’t be rushing out to get one the moment it’s released.

Oh, don’t poopoo it out of hand. There are use cases for it and just because YOU can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not for everyone.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve touched my Mac screen to zoom in/out like I do on my iPad every day. Apple has the touch screen experience to make it work well (hopefully) on the Mac. Time will tell, though.

It is like the TouchBar on MacBook Pro…

After sometimes you notice you use it to navigate on a pdf document, etc.

We can even make a screen shot of the TouchBar

Yes, I had a Windows laptop with touch screen; surprisingly, I used the TouchScreen easilly

It is no question, it is easylie to use when working with a notebook. But when working with two screens on a notebook it looses it’s advantage and you still need your mouse. Possibly it is something you could use for this stuffs. But with a notebook you can live without.

Yes.

And you only know when you use a laptop and… that you miss it (or not).

I have one Linux Notebook with touch. and also one without and macbooks without. I am not missing a touchscreen. But this may be an individual differing thing. Some may love the touch functionality of a notebook/laptop

Some will be excited about a touch-screen MacBook, but where I think Apple’s big market for this will be for those that want an experience that was once offered by Microsoft Surface Studio as a desktop machine.

So envision the iMac (or Studio/Pro Display), that can tilt down enough for drawing on it. Macs are already a favourite with graphic artists, which makes me think this could be a big seller.

Just a guess.

I just bought a spare MacBook Pro with the “nano-etched” anti-glare display and you do NOT want to be ever touching that or cleaning it with anything other than alcohol-free fluid (if you must) and a moleskin grade micro fiber cloth. Presumably a touch screen would be a compromise that would not allow that sort of anti-glare option but yeah I can’t really think of a use case for a touch screen. In fact avoiding the imprecision of touch interfaces is one reason I stick with laptop in preference to phones or tablets.
