Is it just because I'm an old fart

… or are old style forums a lot more intuitive than these infinitely scrollable joints?
IMO the original RB forum was head and shoulders above this or the “official” Xojo forum.

Well, this is the new normal, for young and old :slightly_smiling_face:.

As a fellow old fart who started on CompuServe and even Prodigy fora back in the day (there was a wonderful, not since paralleled FoxPro community on CompuServe for instance), I don’t love this style but it is just, as Torsten said, the “new normal” and I am inured to it I guess.

It took me a little while to discover the unobtrusive timeline scrollbar control on the right as a quick way to get to the most recent posts if you are new to a thread. That has been helpful for me.

I’ve set it up to show new posts first so I don’t get bogged down with old stuff. Same with TOF though it seems there are as many new posts here as there.

+1, my first PC was an 1988 Schneider Euro-PC with DOS 3.3, GW-BASIC and Works 1.01

… and yes modern forums with their infinite scroll are a pest… esp. on mobile devices…

All them “new” online services :stuck_out_tongue:
They came along well after my first PC (a Radio shack CoCo 2) then a Texas Instruments Pro
Never had a modem with the Coco, but the TI I started with a slow modem (forget the first ones baud rate but I updated to a 1200 baud capable one at one point - 56K was amazingly fast !)

Now where’s @DaveS and he can regale you with tales of how he used rocks for computers

US Robotics 14.400 and later 56K - still remember the typical dial-up noise with switch to different speeds and finally dinggg silence…

can you say “acoustic coupler” ?
My first one used that where you placed the phone handset on the cradle
Awesome shit !
It meant I could dial in to the University computers instead of having to wait in line to get a seat in the Comp Sci terminal rooms
Made lots of other students jealous as heck

oh and YES :stuck_out_tongue:

but then so am I

if you got a free line, I remember in my university I’ve needed approx 4-10 attempts before I could dial in and then I was busy not to idle because after 1 Min w/o traffic I’ve heard the Disconnect-Click and ?#*$%&

Oh absolutely!
They had a dial in pool that was 10 lines or something
That increased but there were days getting connected was truly agonizing - but far easier than getting a seat at the terminals

you are really an old fart

In my case a major newspaper reported that the University of Heidelberg would provide free internet access to every student. The next day, as a medical student, I found myself standing with the computer scientists in their department, and asking for my free access data.

They were surprised and annoyed, chattered about “Trumpet Winsock”, and insisting that I, as a non-specialist, would not be able to access it anyway.

The deal was simple: I suggested that they just give me the access data, and I would try it out. If it worked, I would undertake to write documentation. They made the mistake to agree …

After the successful attempt, I told every fellow student about it and shared the documentation myself. I guess I became persona non grata. In any case, I never entered the IT people’s building again  .

The evidence for not entering their zone is here: you are alive and they could not kill you. They would if they would know how to find you

They probably used the wrong search algorithm :stuck_out_tongue:

cause that is long time ago and the most of the it guys from that time had not the greatest Ideas about mathematics and algorithms I guess you are right Norman. (fireproof panties on)

My first modem was 300 baud! Yes I still remember the sounds of the handshake!

Yes best was with acoustic couplers…great sound and really loud
