Remember all these dystopian futures being depicted in bad Sci-Fi movies? Of the rich living in sky scrapers and the poor masses below? It’s turning into a reality on YOUR WATCH thanks to the most far right, cynical, and corrupt supreme court in the history of the US.
ooof, I lived in a place that did this. It really sucked.
Even people not homeless are affected when something like this is in place, because police feel like they can stop you to check, or other things you get in trouble, like vague categories of ‘loitering’ making it more difficult to do things like just wait for a friend (if you happen to show up more than an hour early) etc.
This is where I work, pictures taken just now. It’s a permanent supportive housing complex in San Francisco, USA. It houses around 150 people who are formerly homeless and is part of an initiative that began back during the COVID lockdowns.
Like any country, even those trump referred to as “shitholes”, there are better & worse parts. And lots of things we see, and many more we dont as outsiders
EDIT :
Any society, any nation, is judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members ; the last, the least, the littlest.
Said many times in many ways like Ghandi’s version: "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. "
I dont know who said it originally but its very relevant to this topic
EDIT II :
Remember all, keep it civil
Its a discussion containing opinions and they are neither right or wrong
But they might differ
And we can differ in our opinions and still keep it civil
I’m not bothered by Andrew’s insults as it only reflects badly on HIM … which is also why I never ask for something to be removed and am very much against banning people. Which is also why I applauded NABJ inviting Trump - Trump just self-destroyed as he couldn’t keep his racism in check for even 5 minutes …
I was also against banning BH on TOF (despite being his “arch enemy” and main target), and suggested to Geoff that it was better to restrict BH’s AND MY access to TOF for a month. Unfortunately he banned him nonetheless.
Which is also why I’m against pseudonyms: have the guts to stand by what you say, and don’t hide behind a fake identity - because there is always an ulterior motif unless you live in a totalitarian regime. If you are ashamed to stand by your opinion, then I’m sorry but I have a hard time of respecting you or even taking you serious.
Mea Culpa, Andrew - my meagre intellect is obviously no match for your rhetoric prowess …
… on second thought: isn’t it you who liked to proclaim “freedom of speech” but then does a Musk and complains about everything he doesn’t like and wants it censored? Maybe I mix you up (bit difficult to keep up with all those pseudonyms) but if not: isn’t that a tad hypocritical?
P.S. One of life’s little ironies: About a month after I was banned here I got a message from the server that I got a ‘respected’ badge (not that I cared) as a ‘valued member’ for the number of likes my posts got - and I was only the fourth person to get that after Norman, Dave, and Bob … which shows you exactly why I don’t give a s… about rewards and fake ‘respect’.
Chronic homelessness–that is to say, most of the people who are camping out on the streets–is frequently coupled with mental health and substance abuse problems. People who are mentally sound and not addicted to drugs can be housed pretty fucking quickly. If you’re just down on your luck lost your job, rent got too high, etc. then California–and San Francisco in particular–is amazing at helping you rise out of homelessness, or avoid it altogether.
But the chronically homeless–the ones this ruling will most affect–are a different story. They are incapable of making wise decisions, such as accepting free or low cost housing when it’s offered, because of mental health problems that are exacerbated by drug use (or vice versa; lots of multiple diagnoses in this population.)
Back in 2020-21 I was working on a new housing project that was aimed at providing emergency housing for the chronically homeless so that they could “shelter at home” from COVID. I shit you not, 70% of the people referred to us from the streets turned down the offer of housing. THEY TURNED IT DOWN. They preferred the street?! Does that seem rational? Does that seem wise? No, of course it doesn’t.
These people need to be compelled to accept the services and engage with the service providers. Which is why, for example, California has been looking at doing things like creating a new kind of conservatorship; a legal mechanism to take decision-making power away from an adult who cannot care for themselves. Traditionally, this would only be used for senior citizens with dementia or severely mentally handicapped adults.
In short, we are doing our best to solve the problem within the constraints of the Constitution and laws of the US, and the court vindicated us in this case.
i talked about this on sociological on dicord recently, the life expectency is decreasing, nobody cares; fascitinating, dentist buy Ferraris while people die of lack of healthcare working 3 jobs.
from an european POV, usa is hell.
the best countries of the world are in northern europe
Overall Overdose Deaths
In 2023, there were an estimated 107,543 drug overdose deaths in the U.S., a slight decrease from the 111,029 deaths in 2022 (CDC) (USAFacts).
Fentanyl
Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, was involved in approximately 73,838 overdose deaths in 2022, making it the leading cause of opioid overdose deaths (Addiction Group) (USAFacts).
The involvement of fentanyl in overdose deaths has significantly increased over the years, largely due to its potency and its frequent combination with other substances.
