Well that was a madcap meandering minestrone

Not sure it really contributed much to the discussion of authoritarian lockdowns that have driven young people to suicide and done so much economic damage that it’s quite possible the resulting poverty will kill more than the virus did, and unlike the covid-19 it won’t just be people who are either very old and frail or otherwise immunocompromised. But of course that will be a hidden statistic unlike the rather misleading ones about the number of people who died WITH covid-19.

Without wanting to inflame this discussion further:
If there have been suicides it’s regrettable in the extreme, but with cold objectivity the numbers would be a thousandth of a tiny percent of a tiny fraction of COVID deaths.

And if u really think it’s just the “old” and the “immunocompromised” you really need to check your data sources and stop basing opinion on social media conspiracies. Our ICUs are STILL FULL of young people on ECMO.

But now the vast majority and sicker patients are the unvaccinated. There is a small percentage of people in intensive care that are vaccinated but easily at least 90% aren’t. We noticed empirically a significant improvement with the massive vaccination programme in the UK, and that is backed by scientific data. But there are cohorts of the general population who refuse and they are now our target audience in intensive care…

And while we’re on the subject, it’s not just about deaths. Do you realise that a young healthy male will lose 30% of their muscle mass just being intubated for one week? Even if they survive it, ICU myopathy and neuropathy are debilitating conditions that take months or years to overcome. Forget about working if u suffer with these. And that’s in a country where u don’t have to fund all this care yourself. It’s as much or even more about morbidity, not just mortality.

Please do stop referring to lockdowns as “authoritarian”. That’s about as clever as saying seatbelts in a car are “authoritarian”. It’s the rule because it saves lives. And until more people are vaccinated lockdowns may be needed to slow the spread and stop ICUs from getting overrun.

It was definitely no fun prior to the initial lockdown where we converted pretty much every ward to an ICU and still had to have two beds to every space.

And on that point, irresponsibly taking risks will overwhelm healthcare supply. This means that care has to be diverted from other patients to manage the critically ill.
But over the last year we’ve seen a high death toll - patients whose care was delayed as all resources were switched to managing covid. Now THAT is a hidden statistic worth talking about…
