Battery technology is progressing considerably: charging in 5 min, higher energy density, NOT flammable (my pet gripe), temperature resistant over a wider range, light-weight.
While at the same time prices are falling as they did for solar power. A good new EV used to cost US$50,000 two years ago, US$30,000 last year, and can be had for US$18,000 this year … from CHINA.
The US fixation on oil results in the obliteration of their car industry.
That’s one of the problems needing to be solved. Also in Germany in winter you have long periods with temperatures below 5 degree over a few months. That makes the range shrinking to 60 to 70% of the range they have in summer. It is - today - not the right technology for me t use. Sadly. And if I want to transport my caravan then range shrinks in summer under 50% and in Winter I should not go for more than 100 miles. With my Diesel I have non of this problems. The range is with caravan around 800 kilometers and without near 900. That said I have no chance for using an electric car like tesla. Beside that when driving to south of Germany I am driving mostly without stop. With the need of charging two times I will need to stop two times for an hour. I don’t have the time for it. only thing what we are evaluating: for our tours to grocery store it would be ok. That’s not woth to buy a new car only for this.
I don’t own an EV myself (just an electric wheelchair), but I wonder what -40ºc does to a EV battery?
30 years ago I was working on a custom software project for a mining company up in Thompson Manitoba where it’s regularly -40 in Winter. One of the locals I worked with was driving a brand new Ford of some kind given to him by Ford specifically for testing in Winter conditions.
No Idea but I guess they are testing under several conditions. Against the capacity loss they have only one weapon: heating the battery. But that makes the capacity decreasing even more.
The idea of a UK sovereign wealth fund was proposed by Tony Benn ( Secretary of State for Energy at the time ) and rejected by Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson. That was before Thatcher came into office.
Yes, they seem to think if we let Norway extract the oil and gas from the North Sea and buy it from them rather than extract it ourselves it magically becomes carbon neutral.
Pretty much the same with manufacturing, if we let it happen somewhere else politicians can strut around feeling virtuous because UK has reduced it’s carbon emmissions…
Biggest part on the situation of UK was the Brexit what made UK nearly cutted off from the european economy. Something the thought and believed will not be happened.
And no, there is nobody which tries even to tell that this is carbon reduced. But see it so: if Norway has an Oil accident in the north see it may look better for GB than GB would have an oil accident in north sea. And germany? They are too stupid to run Oil and Gas platforms without an idiot is standing in front of the court cause of it and project will be stopped.
