Even I don’t write often. I always want to write more, but finding topics I feel are worth writing about is hard.
Yes - code completion IS NOT driven by the compiler in any way - and thats in part the problem
Its its own code in the IDE that uses an algorithm to figure out what to suggest that varies from what the compiler does
And thats where the problems come from - it does one things. The compiler does something else.
I came to realize this maybe 18 months before Joe left when he and I were discussing how to make the IDE use the compiler to figure out what should / could be autocompleted
Alas things are what they are now
Finding topics that dont lead me to being depressed about how Xojo could/should do something is tough
So I haven’t written much lately either
Well, I want to solve problems for people. The things I used to write about like image masking and database trickery, have largely been built into Xojo. It’s kind of a good thing I don’t have more ideas.
Though one just popped into my head so…
Much of my recent poking around has been in C# and Vaadin
I suppose I could write about those adventures
Umm, no, that’s not how it played out. Back in the REALbasic days it was the Pros who screamed for new features, and that led to the introduction of the Rapid Release Model which in turn discarded the stable version that you had after a few bug fix releases, and gave us the perpetual beta quality state of Xojo.
I get two green bad # for telling something neutral (how difficult it is to go in a country with a different money - currency notes different from your home country)… so go figure talking about the product !
I feel some people never read the documentation. The last answer I gave ws about “how to change A BevelButton Caption”. He talked about Caption in his message !
And DesktopBevelButton have a Caption, so I read there, and send a link to the doc.
But this is troublesome: I get green points because the asking person does not liked to go to the docs (and this guy never answer questions…). or to be said to go read the docs…
If you are talking about this post, are you sure the “green points” is not because the OP selected your information as the answer?
Ultimately that’s why I stopped blogging about Xojo. There’s only so many negative stories you can write and it just feels like beating a dead horse.
No. “Green points” (green circle) are bad points (left of the A for Alberto). Good points are in a blue circle (right of the A for Alberto).
We are getting off-topic, but I’m sure that is not how the green/blue circles work. If someone sends me a DM I get a green icon to the left of the A for Alberto, if someone replies to my comment and likes the comment, a blue circle appears to the right of my A. I’m pretty sure that if someone selects my answer as the solution, also the green circle appears. Nothing to do with good/bad points.
Really depends on what the direct messages are
If an admin sends you a warning it shows up as a direct message (in green)
Saying “go read this page in the docs” shouldnt be something to get a warning about
But some on the Xojo forums have become so hyper sensitive about everything
imo, if you aren’t offering any other input, yes it should be. Just leaving a link to the docs and not saying another word is a dick move. You should provide some other kind of useful or helpful input.
I report this behavior all the time and have been told “it’s not a violation of the rules.”
Calm down, this fight is not helping. It will not change anything.
The Doc search sucks. Period.
If I do not know the proper ‘terms’ to find what I need, a link to the proper page is helpful. I do not need someone to read the page to me.
I’m not saying no one should ever link the docs. I’m saying that trying to intimidate new users by not even offering some additional comments such as “the docs page has this information, check out X section” is rude and unhelpful.
What about the same use that:
never give answers to anyone questions,
who seems to do not know about the Language Reference question after question…
At first, my answers were sociale…
Then after a while - and after I noticed I found the answer easilly in the LR - I started to give direct link to the command…
As an example, someone asked how to change the text of a BevelButton saying there must be some sort of Caption. My answer was a link to DesktopBevelButton.Caption …
After all, that is all i need to get when I ask questions; I am not awaiting a two pages answer.
NB: I get once a two pages answers and I was happy with it. I knew why my trouble was (I still do not know how to resolve correctly that trouble, but I know why I get it).
Sorry. Bankrupt was a stretch. I was thinking of the Apple Lisa that sucked up cash and got Jobs kicked out. The dangers of passionately pursuing a vision no one wants to buy [at the price].
I don’t see how asking a moderator to review the usefulness of a post makes me a bad person. I’m literally asking for someone else’s input.
It wasnt the Lisa that got jobs kicked out
That wasnt his project team
