IndieAppSales

Quotes were so much work in those ton stone tablets

edit : ton tablets makes no sense
STONE darn it !

The quote, This is my company and no one is going to tell me how to run it, was posted on TOF way before API2, it was of course deleted and when people complain about it, covered with another post that said, my family and every person who knows me kwows that Im uncapable of writing something like that…

*Not quotation marks because I dont have the exact quotes.

uh … BS
I have NO trouble imagining Geoff say exactly that
Remember I worked there for 11 years

So swiveling back to IndieAppSales, does it bother anyone else how much of this is shovelware or needlessly a subscription?

It looks like the ā€œindie Mac sceneā€ is gone, and all that remains is just… depressing.

Well, I’m defining ā€œPleistoceneā€ as the mid-1970s.

If this was a giant bundle that was a take em all or nothing deal it might

but its not

I get to pick & choose so I’m ok with getting the things I need / like & ignoring the rest

You call it ā€œignoringā€ I call it ā€œwasting my time having to scroll through worthless garbage.ā€

Each one detracts from the overall quality and image of the promotion. Out of the whole offering there are no more than a handful of high quality, worth buying apps.

Some gatekeeping is necessary somewhere or you end up with the Amazon Problem.

Who determines what is/isnt garbage ?

As soon as you head down that road then you have to rely on someone else’ opinion of what should/shouldnt be shown or permitted and that may exclude something you might really like, that I consider garbage. Or vice versa

Only you can judge for yourself what you think is/isnt worthy

And my opinion might be very different

So whose takes precedence ?

Its not an easy problem to solve in a generalized way except by you looking over the list for yourself
And me looking for myself

Its been one of the more successful promotions I’ve participated in years.

Edit: I am truly grateful to Matt for his efforts, I started to see an uptick in sales before the promotion started, simply because of the hype around the promotion. Then of course during the promotion.
Matt doesn’t take a cut, so instead of something like BundleHunt where they sell for 50% off and then give you a cut, I made more per sale. Even though this promotion was only for two days, I’ve made nearly as much as some promotions in two weeks.

I would happily participate in future promotions that Matt arranges.

Even if someone only sees Sleep Aid in the promotion and doesn’t buy it, it helps to create confidence in the product and improve my branding. Told ya I’d been learning about marketing

No, it doesn’t – and that’s my point.

Quite honestly, even though BundleHunt shovels in some asset packs that you’ll never use, BundleHunt has a better image in my opinion.

Had you not personally vouched for this promotion, I wouldn’t have gotten past the bullshit ā€œThis application requires JavaScript.ā€ This is a website, not an application, you can take that nonsense elsewhere. Then, once I allowed overbearing JavaScript, I spent all afternoon scrolling through shovelware and trash, making note of one or two exceptions from developers whose names I already recognized.

Seriously, had I taken part in this, I would have pulled out when the shovelware started outweighing the valuable apps.

Maybe my opinion is different, but the Delicious Generation of developers who cared to build high quality apps is gone. What remains is a few holding out hope and a bunch of absolute scams.

Some asshat wants $30 for repackaged memes.

Edit: (This isn’t about you, I feel like I wasted my time giving this a chance.)

I did visit the website and scrolled, and scrolled, and scrolled through the list of apps and I think I got to the M’s before I decided to give up. There might have been some apps that I would buy but it was too hard, IMO, to find them. And to me that’s part of what Tim is saying - too many apps and some of dubious quality and use case.

Maybe I didn’t try hard enough but that is my feedback. I’m willing to part with some money but make it easier to find/filter or be curated, or something. I don’t participate in the bundles all that often but those tend to be limited to a certain number with some curating/gate keeping going on.

Different stroked for different folks I guess.

I found that too, but I made it thru. Maybe Categories would make it easier to digest.

I did go through the entire list a bit at a time

Some kind of grouping would help

Not sure what those might be - maybe games, business tools, developer tools, etc ?

Cross listing should be permitted

But deciding whats in and whats out isnt a role I’d want to thrust on anyone
Nor would I want to take on such a role

I’mma contact Matt today and relay some of your comments, I think it’s important to understand that it’s just one guy doing this in his spare time, and he’s not even charging other developers to participate, it’s a community effort with him arranging the time and providing a single location for potential customers to find all these discounts.

I see it differently than a several people, which while I find sad, it is to be expected.

I recently found a list of Mac download sites from 20 years, and only two were still operational and one of them feels like it’s on life support (ad-infested).

The end result of the promotion for me was a 237% increase in sales over last month, which makes it valuable to me. When I talk to Matt, I will also offer to lend a hand to address some of the comments here as I feel it would benefit not just me, but others also.

It is a fact that an overdose of options make the customer anxious, more like to leave without purchasing and if he purchased something, regreting it…

Well, maybe a more curated list that is also categorized could have ended in many more sales :man_shrugging:t2:

Absolutely, your points are valid as are all the comments here, which is why I feel it is important to relay them to Matt, and to offer my assistance to see if we can improve it.

At the end of the day that’s a win for you. Presumably other developers had similar experiences. Honestly, if any of my utilities still existed I’d have participated too.

Matt did a good thing for the community. I’m sure he was overwhelmed and hopefully that doesn’t scare him off from doing it again. Take our (hopefully) positive feedback to him and see where it goes. Maybe he’ll take you up on the offer to help.
