I’ve heard that some automakers have realized that and are starting to go back.
Some do
Not all
Last time in Germany I rented a SEAT León and its infotainment system was all touch screen
No real buttons
And I rented a Kia in Tennessee that had no real buttons
Didnt like those UI’s at all
Although there were things I really liked in the León - like the vehicle proximity warning lights on the interior. It took me a while to realize thats what it was. the light was built into the doors & trim and would change location & color as the vehicle went past me. Very “space age”
Our Pacifica has a touch screen, while I love the Android Auto integration I hate having to hunt for things and, yes, its quite dangerous when you are driving. At least it does have buttons for some common things like temperature control.
It’s known that this is a dangerous game people playing when using their cars. The touchscreen for everything is a really bad idea. Changing menues is dangerous when driving and reading at the same time. Modern cars often use only the display. Climate control, lights and so on. For me something I would never buy. And never drive. But many people really like that. They are in love with the XXL Display of their tesla or BYD. In europe we had already many accidents cause of this.
I agree.
I’m all for touch-screen computer tech, but as a form of control of a car, no thanks.
I bought a brand new Honda Odyssey in 2012, which has a central dash screen for music and other less critical stuff and a backup camera - but even that was a huge adjustment for me and did make me feel less-safe when using the multi-purpose knob to navigate the screen.
I’ve still got the car and rarely have to interact with the screen anymore, plus I’m my own GPS (I remember roads better than I remember faces and names).
My next vehicle will likely be an electric wheelchair - hopefully a less dangerous scenario ![]()
I hope you mean an electric wheelchair made by Audi or Tesla ![]()
Hopefully not. The Tesla will drive you headfirst into a bus and the Audi will be a stinking old Diesel.
The Audi Electron isn’t any kind of Diesel ![]()
No. Even though I own two cars, I’ve not driven either in over a year. That’s what long-Covid can do to you. Aside from debilitating fatigue, I experience room-spinning vertigo nearly everyday now, so I don’t permit myself the pleasure of driving anymore, but I might be able to manage an electric wheelchair so I get outside once in a while.
Besides, I’d never buy anything from a vile narcissistic idiot who’s never had an original idea in his life.
I’ve ridden in an E-Tron SUV
Its was the hybrid version so for those short spots where a ton of power was needed it would use the gasoline/diesel but mostly ran on electric
Nice vehicle
Although now I’d probably opt for the fully electric one
Ouch !
Not only that but often they are very unresponsive. My ‘21 Hyundai Ioniq EV wants me to confirm that I will drive responsibly every time I start it up. Sometimes the question comes up instantly and the confirm button responds instantly. Other times it comes up halfway down the block when I’m already underway, and regardless, quite often, the button appears several seconds before it’s able to respond to my touch. It’s very annoying. I’ve seen this to a lesser degree on other vehicles.
That’s extremely dangerous while people are watching on this screen instead of the traffic. Makes accidents happened which would not come up with normal “operations” which are not GUI-Touch based. Using a switch is intentionally without really be in the need looking on it. That makes it complex.
I’m with @bkeeney - I don’t care much about controls if they get the job done, but non-native Open/Save file system navigation drives me nuts.
Exactly that’s the reason why I use nearly in all my applications the native one
Sadly, on Mac, the NATIVE colorpicker drives me up the wall.
I dont want an event driven thing. I want a popup, choose a color, return a value.
She wrote about the file chooser not the color picker
I know. But the thread is about native GUI, and we went to native dialogs.
By the way: the color picker drives nuts ![]()
Thank you all for your answers and tips / Ideas about native GUI. As far as I could see here the most annoying is when and if file operations like open, save, choose directory aren’t native. The rest of the guy makes no difference if it is native or even not in the most cases. And yes, I know that many people like native GUI and the same amount of people is not even thinking about it. Native GUI is - it seams so - a point where we can get into flaming wars.
But nothing makes it so important to have native GUI that an implementation of native GUI for java would make sense for me except using the native File operation GUI what I do anyhow with JavaFX and with Java Swing.
