Doesn’t just apply to Xojo but everything, but still a nice example why “You can use the license you bought forever“ isn’t what it seems to be:
As for Xojo all the Lite license holders without current subscription are screwed - pay $499 or be unable to run your apps on the new MacOS.
Say what you will about Windows, it has at least in the past been backward compatible to a fault. Whereas Apple has always casually broken things like this.
I’m curious, however, if there’s any valid argument that this would not happen to, e.g., Objo or Buoy if certain practices are followed. Forgive me for suspecting this was avoidable, but I was around in the Xojo world when it turned out they detected OS versions from parsing the OS version string rather than the Apple-approved way, when Apple guidance was that they were not guaranteeing the version string returned by the OS would follow past patterns. It was supposed to be a friendly human readable description, not a source of truth that would never break existing assumptions.
Yeah…
Xojo has been doing drag and drop the same way on macOS since the beginning even though Apple has made changes over the years. Several people tried and failed to get them to update. But that would have required breaking people’s code.
BTW - Buoy’s drag and drop model doesn’t suffer from this issue.
NOTE: the assertion that Xojo is using macOS frameworks is kind of a misnomer. Yes they are, but the method has been deprecated for years.
I’m curious if this person you’re talking about actually has lost functionality. Just because they’re not selling lite licenses any more doesn’t mean they actively went through the IDE and stripped out the licensing code. They could have but it seems like a huge waste of time just to piss off people who have already given you money.
All the more reason I need to get the shim and converter done asafp.
still makes me wonder WHY do this ?
All it does is piss off people who want to give you money
And probably decreases their revenue from what it had already likely collapsed to after all the other price increases
But to the point of “being able to use your license forever”
Yes - you can
Never update your OS
Apple, and even MS, have at times done stuff in OS updates that have broken existing code
Apple just happens to see it more as a sport to do this than MS does
You are correct - my mistake. I remove that part.
