A viral hoax fooled a buncha right wing influencers claiming that Zohran Mamdani, the incoming mayor of New York City, would force public school children to âlearn Arabic numerals.â The satirical rumor was designed to provoke outrage, despite the fact that Arabic numeralsâthe digits 0 through 9âare the basic numbers taught and used every day in the United States. Many right-wing influencers either misunderstood or chose to amplify the claim as proof of radical educational policy or alleged âIslamificationâ.â
Among those who spread the hoax, Derrick Evans, a far-right activist and former legislator, tweeted: âBREAKING: Zohran Mamdani plans to mandate that all elementary school students in New York learn Arabic numerals. We must protect our children from forced cultural change!â His message was widely circulated and spurred similar reactions online. Laura Loomer, another prominent voice, commented, âHe should certainly be denaturalized. Only in America can an Islamic immigrant⌠become Mayor of Americaâs most iconic city,â attacking Mamdani in the context of the hoax and implying a broader cultural threat. Ian Miles Cheong, a popular right-wing internet personality, wrote: âJUST IN: Newly elected NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani will be REQUIRING all K-12 students to learn Arabic numerals. Theyâre not even trying to hide it anymore,â reinforcing alarm and amplifying the viral misunderstanding.â
Their posts were soon joined by meme accounts and additional conservative influencers, such as Catturd and Libs of TikTok, who echoed outrage about the supposed mandate, helping the story snowball into a wider right-wing backlash. Fact-checkers and educators attempted to clarify the situation, pointing out the absurdity and revealing how quickly misinformation spreads when influential figures latch onto satirical content as if it were true.
