Xojo Android Fails (again)

That’s really nice. People want an app but getting a web app. Is that a good idea? And don’t think about what’s in my head. In fact progressive apps are interesting but I wouldn’t use that way to provide a company application. Everybody gets that it’s a web app and not an app. None of my customers would accept that. Beside the fact that we use Bluetooth, camera, barcode and QR code in several apps. I know, can be provided by Cordova. But that’s another way.

In my case it does so a PWA isnt suitable
Its VERY close to being possible but there are a couple bits of functionality that wont work that way
Specific hardware sensors that, at this time, we havent go a way to expose to a PWA and arent willing to invest what seems to be significant time to determine how to do it

You could write an App for Android and one for iOS to expose them to your PWA. Much work.

Or just keep on in C# where I do not need to do much of anything extra :stuck_out_tongue:

maybe later we’ll think about a PWA as there are some interesting upsides there but not right now

Just out of curiosity, does anybody watch the webinars Geoff Perlman gives on YouTube, such as the one transitioning 4D users to Xojo? Any thoughts on these webinars?

I was almost tempted to buy a Xojo licence again. However, after starting up Xojo 2024 r1, which crashed before I could use it, I landed hard with both feet on the ground.

Why should I? PureBasic is so much better and stable for me.

I cannot understand why Geoff Perlman is so naive. As the CEO, he should be aware that something is very wrong. Also his target, moving 4D users, are they not investigating before making a decision?

The moment Norman or Thorsten Stueker announce they are switching to Xojo again, I will make the switch too. However, will that day ever come?

I think betting on the happening would be a losing proposition

although both (I believe) are being forced by other circumstances to still be using it to some extent

You could be waiting a VERY long time

Maybe waiting for than two decades

longer than your ban time on xojo forums? :stuck_out_tongue:

That might be the right time frame :stuck_out_tongue:

I think I have 995 years to go

You are going to outlive us all!

Yes, the day will come when Norman and me will be back in Xojo Forum. Exactly that’s the day, we will have a perfect Xojo. Or at least soon from that day

There are days I feel like I already have :stuck_out_tongue:

as someone who is in both the 4d and livecode camps, both of them, in the last year, announced pricing and licensing changes. in both cases, the new version is much more expensive than the old version.
most 4d nerds are building desktop and web apps. i don’t know that anyone who is using 4d server for c/s apps is switching to xojo and rewriting the back end. 4d’s big selling point is how seamless the two are merged together. in fact, switching from standalone to a multi-user setup is really easy.
it seems that most of the livecode nerds are hobbyists, and hypercard holdovers. those seem like a better fit for xojo, the frustration over there has been brewing for a long time, with complaints similar to the ones expressed, over here.

Well, as anyone who has spent time around Geoff knows he’s always the smartest guy in the room - even when he’s not. But I feel he’s not intellectually curious about competitor products and thus the IDE and language are falling way behind.

You see it here with posts. Many of us were very prominent Xojo developers, advocates, cheerleaders, etc. and once we made the decision to move on from Xojo we found great development tools with rich ecosystems, huge developer communities, and an overall better experience. Almost everyone has said, “I wish I had switched earlier”.

Changing development tools is not an easy or quick process. And Xojo is appealing for many reasons but the strengths of the product is desktop and they’ve pissed it all away chasing web and mobile targets.

the problem with every platform is trying to get into the sweet spot. i don’t blame any platform for thinking that web or mobile was the future. if nothing else changes, i think they are. heck, our firm has not built a single desktop app since 2010. everything has been for mobes.
but as we have seen with flutter, KMP, and RN, x-platform mobe is not great. i suspect that is why web apps are so popular - it’s far easier to target all platforms in a web app, even if support for native features is difficult, and single-threading and other speed considerations are even more difficult.

Before that, hell will freeze over. :smiling_face_with_horns:

Open source is the answer. Closed source means your work and apps can be held hostage if the company makes a decision that negatively affects you.

FileMaker and 4D hiked their pricing. Xojo became non-responsive to devs. What tends to happen is devs will use the last “best” version. Maybe using older versions and updating when issues begin to appear, but at some point, unless you can keep using old hw and OS, your choice goes away.

If you follow that logic, the faster you leave the abusive relationship, the better. It’s scary and painful and expensive and will just get worse over time.

Sorry but that will be not enough for us to come back. Hell freezes over, Devil capitulates in form of an unconditional surrender, Apple will make all their stuffs open source and half the prices and, last but not least, Microsoft Windows 2182 will be completely bug free running on all hardware including raspberry pi. Then and only then we may consider to do that. Consider. means: that is not promised.

Open source projects get abandoned too, so it’s not automatically always a better choice.

Also, I like to have fully hardware accelerated gpu and neural accelerator support on my development board and open source drivers perform really poorly. I choose performance and useability over ideology.
