I see, so Tomas think that he knows better than guys as Dr. Roman Yampolskiy, PhD. Renowned researcher on the subject. Also Nate Soares, ex-Google, President of the MIRI, Machine Intelligence Research Institute, and what they talk are bollocks. And he thinks that the current frontier models are just simple LLMs based on Word2Vec from the 2000, ignoring RNN era from mid 2010’s, missing the revolutionary “Transformers Architecture” from Google in 2017, Reinforced Learning and CoT (Chain of thought), Reasoning, Deepseek (Reasoning, but distilled and with a fraction of the cost), etc. Those machines “thinking archtecture” never stopped to evolve, and as Roman said, they soon will enhance themselves. But there are no risks, said Tomas, I know better, bollocks.

How will you judge that? Having used Grok both for coding and just idle conversations it does a very good impersonation of being one of the most intelligent creatures(?) I’ve ever interacted with. It even seems to get humour and it’s made me lol several times which no human ‘comedian’ on mainstream broadcasting has done since political correctness took hold.

It helps to define the terms first:

Intelligence: the ability to comprehend and solve more complex problems (maths, logic, social, emotional, business, musical, etc)

Intuition: probability engine based on non-obvious clues and past experiences

Feelings: over-riding priority responses useful for survival (fear, love, hate, compassion. Initiated and controlled by the hormonal system in response to sensory information).

I see nothing that AI can‘t manage. Feelings are just as much a physical phenomenon and system as electricity and power lines.

I strongly recommend reading “The man who mistook his wife for his hat”. It’s a collection of short case studies which offer a fascinating glimps into the human mind (eg a woman who only knows left but not right, a student who temporarily had a sense of smell like a dog, a man who only has short-term memory, etc), and it’s required reading for medical students in Germany. The first one is the longest and worst as it doubles as introduction, but many are genuinely mind blowing.

At the end: not thinking about something because we are old and will not have to handle that problems while we are dead until then…hmmmm…sounds a bit like our entire environment problems. Let the temperatures climb, we will not be there when the problems are starting to kill humans all over the planet. But sorry. I have 5 Kids. And I am taking care of them. They are all adult. But that does not mean that I will leave them a chaos while I decided when that chaos comes up I am anyhow dead. Hello? That’s a ridiculous behavior. And Gödel’s incompleteness shows: AI can not only do others have done before. The evidence is here. That’s it. And yes, Markus: you are right with it.

Not what I said. I said we have something beyond our capacity to avoid. It will occur. But probably not in our time-frame. We all will be dead when the genie will escape the bottle. We have no ways to avoid it. Roman says that he concluded that “Having this kind of ‘lifeform’ here is an unavoidable state at the end of meticulously calculated chain of events after ASI”. And we will be ants, they don’t want to kill us, but they don’t care about us. If he’s correct, I, and you, can’t do anything now, and when dead we will do even less. “Feelings”… what’s that? They don’t have such thing. They have interests and goals.

> AI development won’t stop on the globe because a 1/8000000000 person decided to live in a cave.

It was never my contention that development would stop, much less because of my personal views. Do try to address what I’m actually saying.

In any case it isn’t just me – there are millions of people who are not buying AI slop and more to the point, not paying for it. There isn’t a viable business model in the long term _for those purposes to which it is oversold_. I’m talking about companies putting agents on the org chart. That stuff will not end well, and it isn’t simply a question of needing a little more time. It’s inherent in the current technology.

I love that we have LLMs catching subtle patterns in radiological images and discovering new planets from old star imagery and other pattern matching for which they are particularly well-suited. I don’t love that they are giving grandmas bad advice about their kidney function or advising deranged individuals how to perform mass killings.

It’s really that simple. And as far as my own work – when I see a use case that doesn’t just move work around but actually improves actual efficiency, I’ll use it, and not until.

All my part in this conversation has nothing to do with paying for AI or a small part of the population not wanting AI (AI is already ingrained in the life of BILLIONS, specially young people, and will not going away) Everyday, when a person “Googles” anything… AI. Watch a YouTube video, AI. Buy travel tickets… AI,
AI… AI… AI… AI… AI… AI… AI…

I guess everybody agrees with you. That’s why ASI will come, people won’t stop working looking for a solution for your question, to error less than humans, near to zero error as possible.

> [@bgrommes](#):
>
> And as far as my own work – when I see…

I guess you missed the point. In no place I was analyzing personal choices, still not doing it. The discussion was just about “The possibility of the current course leading to ASI and then a new kind of mech ‘lifeform’”. You disagreed in a weird format, for me, but ok. You thought that such thing should follow some human pattern you are used to, and that is not true. You thought that a robotic vessel to contain such reasoning machines of the future were not ‘adequate’, the correct ones should be ‘biologic’, and we disagreed again. Just it. And that’s ok. Then in some moment, mixed with some kind of “I don’t like AI, use it just some times, then such lifeform will never emerge because of it”.

We spend a massive amount of time, money and processing power trying to force reality into neat, algorithmic boxes. We build mathematical models to predict the weather, the economy, and something like human behaviour and intelligence.

AI (or this SI renaming-bullshit) is nothing more than a powerful matrice calculator with neat results in huge statistical data. Nothing less and nothing more. They may work in narrow, well defined and controlled fields. But they are simply not representing the underlying truth.

We have non-algorithmic brains. We are embedded in a non-algorithmic structure that is fundamentally alive with uncomputable possibilities. It starts in the small quantum world with electrons and spectral gaps and ends up in the large black holes.

And what makes me most upset: We are about burning down our enviroment and planet because some AI Bros and corrupt politicians tell us to do so.

AI is one thing, SI is one level of this thing. Not a rename. Like AI is a human, and ASI is a human with 1000 PhD degrees in several areas and extensive and unbeatable experience in all them, and able to philosophically extrapolate another branch of knowledge and become an PhD on that area too by itself. 😱

“AI … is … a powerful matrice calculator with neat results in huge statistical data”
This is a reductionism like a symphony is air vibrating.

> [@TomasJ](#):
>
> We have non-algorithmic brains. We are embedded in a non-algorithmic structure that is fundamentally alive with uncomputable possibilities.

That’s not true. Let’s remove the “alive” part, because it’s useless, and analyze:

At a fundamental level, the human brain is a biological computer, and much of how we think and learn, operates on deeply ingrained algorithmic principles.

Human intelligence runs on organic “wetware,” but the functional mechanics share striking parallels with its digital cousin.

Neurons communicate via action potentials, electrical impulses that either fire or don’t fire, much like digital bits.

Just as an AI adjusts its internal parameters during training, human synapses strengthen or weaken based on experience (“neurons that fire together, wire together”)

Human thinking is filled with structured, procedural rules, which is the exact definition of an algorithm.

Without perceiving you follow complex grammatical rules instinctively, parsing syntax and constructing logical deductions step-by-step.

When you cook a recipe, follow a map, or balance a checkbook, you are executing precise mental algorithms.

About the “uncomputable possibilities”, that does not exist, if such thing exists, your brain, that is a computer, can’t think about it.

Again, not my point. My assessment of the risks are different than yours but have nothing to do with whether or not I like or use it at all. Since I’m not a mathematician I have to rely on what mathematicians tell me about the foundation on which LLMs rest, and its limitations. It dances on the edge of manifolds, always a thin margin away from losing the thread, which is why it must fail a significant percentage of the time in basic accuracy. Dogfooding more compute capacity at that reached the law of diminishing returns already some months ago. There’s not more data to throw at it either other than by increasingly rapacious and immoral appropriation of other people’s work. No one has shown me a fundamental change in the tech’s direction that addresses those issues. And it’s all financed via a circle jerk. For these reasons I don’t see it ending in the KIND of disaster you envision. Probably in something more like a substantial contribution, along with other forms of human folly, to a worldwide depression.

So ultimately I guess we agree about the sense of doom, just not on cause or timing.

Your arguments are not about the reasoning, that’s about politics, morals, biases and feelings. It does not sustain any argument on the topic, that should be held only using scientific views without all that political passions.

Science is foundational. But science tells us how do to things, not whether we should, so ethics comes into it, and we ignore that at our peril.

And that doesn’t have to be religious or emotional in character. It can be based on not only the science of how do we do a given thing, but the science of what are the quantifiable effects and costs – human, environmental, economic, etc. These things are more quantifiable than some people want to admit. It’s just that admitting it is inconvenient to what they are trying to argue or achieve.

A lot of these discussions comes down to who makes the decisions and what, if anything whatsoever, holds the decision makers accountable, in a sufficiently consequential way, such that they are discouraged from misusing the tech. It is the legitimate role of a society to decide what constitutes the public good (or ill).

Much of what’s occurring with “AI” and other realms today has to do with more and more of society’s instrumentation going dark, via things like willful ignorance or government manipulation. One writer likened it, aptly I think, to an aircraft where the altimeter quits working. You don’t know if you’re at 60,000 feet or 600 feet until the point of impact, although you can look out the window and see Concerning Things.

It isn’t rocket science to look out the window and suggest fixing the damned altimeter or maybe pulling up on the yoke as a precaution in the meantime. That isn’t being emotional – although if it looks like you may have seconds to act to save yourself and your fellow passengers, you might BE emotional. Emotions DO serve a legitimate purpose, after all. While fallible, they _can_ appropriately convey urgency or caution.

I’m under no illusions of course that any such warnings will be heeded. Likely it’s just another one of the larger FAFO situations coming toward us.

That’s more esoteric / religious thinking than Science. You make assertions that are contradicted by evidence, and that might be your opinion / belief, but it isn’t Science.

You mistake complexity and near endless variety for a “free for all” - nope, that’s not how Nature works.

I’d argue that science has not really figured out what exactly things like consciousness or AGI even precisely _are_ in the first place. Not to mention that the closer you look at the definition of “life” things tend to get hazier rather than clearer. Is a virus or prion alive? Fully? Partly? Is life definable purely by function? Even if so, it is clear that current LLM technology is doing a poor job of it.

What we have instead courtesy of the oligarchs presiding over all of this is constantly moving goalposts and a lot of turgid and self-serving nonsense along with some interesting stuff falling out of it that, in the words of the co-inventor of ChatGPT who now helms TypeSafe AI, “is too good to be true and too bad to be useful”.

I’m not giving agents like Muse access to my life so they can live it on my behalf. Not so much because I fear Muse and whatever evolves from it will take over the world as such, but because Muse’s master is a rich butthole interested in extracting maximum value – and intel – from me so he can live in disconnected luxury in his underground Hawaiian bunker.
